Arfon Hughes:  from  Dinas Mawddwy

A farmers son from Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog near Llangollen who's father Henry T Hughes was a renowned poet, dramatist and supporter of 'Y Pethe' (Welsh culture), which Arfon has now taken up the mantle of his love of all Welsh life and culture to set up a guided walking tour business 'Teithiau Cerdded DYFI Walking Tours' in the Dyfi valley near Machynlleth. He is currently a part time administrator with 'ecodyfi' a social environmental enterprise and was a Rural Housing Enabler for 15 years with local authorities and housing associations in North Wales. He is a member of Mawddwy community council.

Arfon has been recognised by the Gorsedd of Bards of the National Eisteddfod for his work in the Dinas Mawddwy community which he has been active. Some of his actions was to establish Y Fari Lwyd evening to encourage Welsh leraners to be more confident, setting up a Plygain carol service in the village chapel which resulted from the local church closing down, he is secretary of the community enterprise Cwmi Nod Glas who has reignited the village with purchasing and leasing a village cafe and gallery and two flats for local people.  

Lately he has been involved in an ambitious community project to upgrade public footpaths which will increase local fitness and knowledge of the area's history. He has also been instrumental in setting up the Dinas Mawddwy History Society and also a Poetry group which has been competing successfully on BBC's Talwrn y Beirdd radio programme. Recently he has been successful with a Heritage Lottery Grant to raise awareness of local place names. He has a very understanding family!
