Cancers

Cancers are of concern in most breeds and a great deal of research is currently ongoing which will not only be of benefit to dogs, but to humans as well.   There are many cancers which affect both species and which have similar characteristics, which is why this significant research is arousing so much interest worldwide.   The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies in Edinburgh is carrying out a survey using Labradors which seems on the face of it only of interest to Labrador owners.   However this is indeed a very important survey, the results of which could have far reaching effects on both the dog and human population.

Basset Hounds - Lymphoma in adult dogs is more frequent than in younger dogs.   Male dogs are prevalent, although gender does not seem to be related to lymphoma in dogs.   Studies report that the Basset Hound together with the Boxer and Rottweiler are at higher risk than other breeds.   The reasons are, as yet, unknown.
