Primary School Quiz
14 March 2017

March 14th saw much excitement and anticipation when the Rotary annual Primary School Quiz was held. Seven local schools from the East Neuk took part. As is traditional, this year’s event was hosted by last year’s winners, Crail Primary.  As well as again entering a team themselves, Crail welcomed competitors from Anstruther, Colinsburgh, Elie, Lundin Mill, Pittenweem and St Monans. Crail Head Teacher Louise Donaldson and her staff made everyone warmly welcome: competing primary sevens, along with teachers and supporting parents.

The quiz consisted of 10 rounds of 6 questions on a variety of topics including geography, the natural world, literature, maths - and a picture round.

The room buzzed with excitement as the quiz started, with all teams in great form. After the first two rounds the scoring was very close, with high scores all round. Two more rounds saw Anstruther and Crail inch slightly ahead, but with Pittenweem – and the made-up team of ‘Reserves’ in hot pursuit.

By the end of round six, Crail were in the lead by two points from Anstruther and Pittenweem, who were jointly second. But then we saw a dramatic change in fortune with an outstanding performance from Anstruther, moving them just into the lead. They tenaciously continued this progress for the final rounds, which took them to victory, with a great total of 110 points out of a possible 120. Crail and Pittenweem were close behind on 104 and 102 respectively.

The team from Anstruther will now be invited to take part in the Area Final on the 17th May at Morgan Academy in Dundee. The two top teams from there will then qualify for the Rotary District final.

The picture below shows the winning team from Anstruther receiving the competition cup from Rotary Club president Andrew Lindsay, who expressed his warm congratulations to all the teams who took part and to their teachers for such fine performances. We would like to wish the Anstruther team, along with Head Teacher Robin Currie, Class Teacher Emma Gillingham and supporter Celia Young, every success as they move forwards.
