January meetings
26 January 2015

Anstruther Rotary Club has started 2015 with contrast and real variety in its January meetings. The 12th saw local speciality baker Murray Barnett speaking about his business and the intricacies of producing high-quality and innovative breads and other bakery products. We learned much about the sourcing of different grains and flours and of the business need to continuously change with the times. Murray also spoke of his work with Waid Academy pupils; particularly the practical demonstrations he gives.

On the 19th the club was pleased to welcome retired Meteorologist John Minhinnick. John is a distinguished Rotarian too, having served in many roles including that of president of Rotary in Great Britain and Ireland. John spoke of the many changes already happening in Rotary – and of more planned. All with the aim of developing Rotary and its service ethos to reflect our changing world.

Without doubt though both these interesting meetings were surpassed by the club’s own Burns Supper on the 26th.

The haggis was skirled in and addressed, grace said and an excellent traditional meal served by The Rockies restaurant at Anstruther golf club. We enjoyed a fine ‘Immortal Memory’ an interesting ‘Town & Trade’ and an excellent ‘Tam O’Shanter’. But all of that was outclassed by superb entertainment provided by pupils of Waid Academy. And what very fine musicianship – flute, violin, French horn, guitar, voice and a demonstration of Scottish dancing too.

It made for a memorable evening of fellowship and friendship with an appreciative vote of thanks being proposed by club member Alastair Graham.
