Adriatic
12 September 2011

At our meeting of 12th September we were entertained by club member William Duncan speaking of his travels around the Adriatic.

There was a memorable visit to Venice, with its remarkable splendour undoubtedly now increasingly at risk from a rising sea level and regular tidal floods. William spoke of work being done to construct flood control barriers and, in a lighter vein, recalled getting soaked in St Marks Square – and not just by the price of a couple of coffees! The square apparently now floods more than 100 times a year, but he philosophically noted that the tides do have the benefit of cleansing the canals.

A favourite town was Dubrovnik; something of a jewel, but with sad memories and memorials to the not so distant past, when fighting took many lives and left many more scars.

William finished off his talk with a session of jokes he had harvested from entertainments on his trip. He commented that he would place these in the category of ‘classic’ or ‘vintage’ humour, redolent of a favourite volume of jokes he had mislaid many, many, years earlier in a Perth hotel!

Whilst sympathising with the loss club member Graham Meacher, tongue in cheek, noted that it may have been the club’s gain!   But nonetheless complimented William on his entertaining talk and proposed a warm vote of thanks.
