Euroscola
22 March 2010

The Rotary Club of Anstruther’s meeting of March 22nd heard a very interesting illustrated talk by Waid Academy student Gemma Gratton, who had been sponsored by the club to participate in the EuroScola scheme.

This scheme sees selected students attend for four days at Strasbourg, the home of the European Parliament, where they enjoy a range of activities and interact with students from throughout the European Union.  These activities included a street survey where Strasbourg residents were quizzed on what they knew about Scotland; a visit to a modern art gallery, and research on Strasbourg as a cultural town.

The highlight was a visit to the European parliament building itself, where students, sitting in the enormous parliamentary chamber, could ask questions of officials, such as about the current economic climate and the issue of the Greek economy. Gemma also told the club about some more relaxing activities such as the ceilidh that the Scottish students organised and which was attended by many of the other nationalities. An impromptu Gay Gordons outside Strasbourg Cathedral must have been a sight to behold.

Gemma pointed out that for a lot of time during the four days she and the other Scottish students were using the French language. She concluded by thanking the Rotary Cub for its generous support, and told club members that the experience had given her an enormous confidence boost which would stand her in good stead when she started at university next academic year. Club president Bill Henderson proposed the vote of thanks and presented Gemma with a framed certificate.
