Bower, Sie - A close friend of Olave's. She it was who had introduced B-P to Olave on THAT ship in 1912. In about 1966 I was living with Olave when Sie came to stay. Serving a meal, Olave dropped a bean, and picked it up in her fingers, saying, "Fingers were made before forks!" Responded Sie, acidly, "Yes, Dear - but not yours !"

Briggsie – Molly Briggs, Countess Gravina. Her husband, Italian Count Gravina, was summoned by Hitler to run the Bayreuth Festival, so off he went, and Briggsie and her children made their way to England. They lived in a caravan on a farm, and she earned her living by doing a milk round. An ardent mountain climber, in 1959, aged 55, she was part of the first “Women’s Himalayan Expedition”. The leader, deputy and two Sherpas were killed by an avalanche, and Briggsie had to take over, and deal with the bodies, and arrange the winding up of the expedition. I met her when she called on Olave after her tour of Africa described here -

Brooke-Popham, Opal – Lady, wife of Sir Robert Brooke-Popham, Governor of Kenya 1937-1939 – B-P & Olave had emigrated to Kenya in 1938, so they were friends. https://www.thepeerage.com/p73704.htm#i737031 Upon Brooke-Popham’s death in 1953, Opal retired to Somerset, and co-incidentally, in about 1964 she let a wing of her house to Olave’s son-in-Law’s mother, Violet Clay. The Brooke-Pophams were referred to as “the other B-Ps” (29 Mar 1947)
Brown, Geoffrey (Allen), born 21 Jul 1918, Hugh (Baden Powell), born 19 Sep 1916, and Joan, born Nov 1926 (siblings) and Gladys and Percy (parents). Gladys Eleanor was always known as "Bubbles", born 5 Sep 1892, died 1991 at age 98. Her husband was Rev. Percy (James) Brown. They were married 21 Nov 1911. He was Rector of Torresdale, Philadelphia. Court, Annie - had been a housemaid with us both at Luscombe and at Bradfield. When she saw the announcement of my engagement in the paper, she wrote to my
mother asking if 'Miss Olave' would need a maid. Mother replied that I should only be keeping a very small staff as I should not be at all wealthy but Annie came nonetheless. At Ewhurst Place she worked hard as 'everything'. In May, Annie introduced her brother. Ernest Court, to be chauffeur and to look after the horse. Later, Annie's sister came as parlourmaid. With the addition in June of a butler and a 'Tweeny' we were, for the present, adequately cared for!

Monier-Williams, Clare and Muriel - Actually Clarence (Q2 1893 - Q3 1974), but always known as Clare. He and his wife Muriel Leonie nee Edwards (6 April 1896 – 1992) lived in a block of flats in Cheyne Walk, Chelsea. They eventually realised that they lived there because it was convenient for his work. And he kept working in order to keep living there. So they sold the flat and bought a cottage in the country. They had a 16-year-old cat, that had never been out of their flat – except once, when it fell out of their window and landed on the balcony of the flat below. When they move to the country, they took the cat, and when they let it out, it shot off and climbed their tree ! They were both very keen gardeners, but had no garden so they would come down to Olave and spend the day working in her allotment (part of a walled garden in the Palace Park). Olave called then “the A.G.s” – Assistant Gardeners.

Occasionally, Eileen would type the entire letter for Olave to sign - and sometimes Eileen would even sign the letter. But it is often possible to distinguish, for Eileen's typing was far "better" that Olave's.
