Hipswell Cemetery Update

Established in 1958 for residents of Colburn,Hipswell and Scotton. Hipswell Cemetery is managed by the Joint Burial Authority .The Burial Authority is made up of Councillor representatives from each of the three Parish/Town Councils.

Several years ago a new cemetery adjacent to the existing area was consecrated and is now open for Burials, not Cremations at this present time.

In December the Burial Authority agreed revised rules and regulations that have now come into effect that are intended to regulate both the new and existing cemeteries. The regulations are hoped to resolve some of the Health and Safety issues and may not affect any of the present plots but will apply to any new ones and the new cemetery.

Work is also being carried out to repair and make safe the memorial stones and also level uneven ground. Additionally, graves in the new cemetery, will have a channel cut out similar to those in the nearby Military cemetery which would allow families to place items of remembrance in that area.

Periodic inspections of the cemetery for health and safety reasons are made and any breaches of these conditions that come to light will be noted and removed for safe keeping.

The burial board recognise that this is an emotive subject but feel it is imperative that they must protect the health and safety of visitors and contractors to the cemetery.

“We would ask that anyone who has loved ones here will respect and adhere these new rules to ensure it is a safe place to visit.”

Any instances relating to damage/loss to graves or memorial stones must be reported to the Burial Board and appropriate action will be taken with the authorities.

Full details of the new regulations can be found on the Rules and Regulations page.

We would like to thank Tesco, Oops A Daisy and Mrs A Kemp for their kind donations of flowers before Christmas that were placed on some of the Children’s graves.
