Opening of Great Hautbois House, May 1988
At the opening of Hautbois House, my mother was the Guider in charge of the Conservation Team of Rangers & Young Leaders; we spent the whole weekend clearing old undergrowth from the , now, paths that lead round the back of the house, planting a vegetable patch (no longer there) and chopping down overgrown ivy. I attend the 30th Celebrations and their archives contain photos I'd never seen before. Ruth Brown, House Manager when the Centre opened, allowed let me return for a month of work experience after I finished my GCSEs; I spent the month clearing ragwort/helping to sort donated camp equipment ready for hire, washing up in the kitchen with Jacqui Cant (who as since been County Commissioner for Suffolk) among other laborious tasks needed to maintain such a stunning property. I believe Freddie, who was the recently hired Groundsman at the time is still there.
A few years before, 1980 I think, I camped with a Guide Company on the Lime Pits site.

Betty at the World Moot in Switerland 1992
It was a privilege to be a Aussie Rover at the World Rover Moot in Kandersteg, Switzerland in 1992 when Betty visited and was present at the Closing Ceremony.

27th July - 6th August, 1992.

She visited the Moot on Sat 1st August, the Swiss National Day, and spent the full day visiting all the National displays.

She was at Our Chalet, and (from her diary) :-

We drove over to Kandersteg to visit the World Moot at the Scout Centre. A great organisation, several thousand from many countries tramping along the paths through the woodlands between the groups of tents, and along the main wide paths they had set up stalls to show their wares. We met the Camp Chief Walter Hofstetter - very large! with puffy moustache, baby daughter on his back, and small son in tow, and wife in uniform too.
Hubert Buhlmann - Moot Chief - (beard & specs) & they escorted us to a vast marquee for supper (very large tough mutton legs !)
Roger Spindler took me to the Radio Car & did a tape-recording braodcast to the Camp - quite a long interview, & I ended it with Dad's message at the Moot in Australia, 1935.
Then we walked along to the Arena & Stage for the performance - Swiss band, & dances, & Alpenhorn, & other countries, speeches by Jaques Moreillom, Director-General of WOSM (too long & serious & full of statistics!) & others, and Me - again quoted Dad's message (by heart & no specs on!) & translated by "Penguin" Georg Hilber (born 22.2.67 - "born to be a Scout") very popular !

Then fought my way to my friends & we were "Guarded" to our car, and waved away, as the Torchlight Procession started.
Bonfires and Fireworks all around on our drive home, about mid-night!

[Thank you for that !]

Mongu
I enjoyed reading "Journey to School" [on the New Stories shelf in the Library at www.spanglefish.com/NorthernRhodesiaJournal]. I traveled from Lusaka to Johannesburg many times in the 1960's and share similar memories - particularly sardines and condensed milk. My brothers in the late 1940's used to travel by bus from Abercorn to Mbeya in Tanganyika - they too have amazing memories.

I loved the anecdote about your mother "being lucky as I always am." When we were in Mongu your mother informed us that whenever she was "cold, hungry, wet or whatever" she just imagined that she was "warm, dry, well fed, etc!" With that approach you are always lucky!

My dad, Bim, was vet in Mongu from 1958 to 1960 when you dad was RC. He was responsible for the government horses. Your sister Jill was a keen rider. Mongu, of all the places I lived in NR, is a jewel in my memory.

Regards
Buz (Mark) Trevor
