The Woolly Lumpkins welcome you to their website

The Woolly Lumpkins are three Cheviot sheep who were orphaned at birth and brought up by being bottle fed.

To pay their way in life they decided to let their wool be used for making needle felted toys. These would be sold at markets and craft fairs.

But first their foster mum had to learn how to needle felt. Needle felting is a technique used to make sculptures out of wool using barbed needles that mesh the wool together as the needle is pushed into the wool and pulled out.

To extend the range of products for selling at craft fairs we diversified into making wet felted fashion items as well. The Lumpkins frown on this as merino wool is used in this ancient wet felting process. Merino is very soft and felts very well. Cheviot wool is a bit too thick and springy for making fine textiles and is best suited to the more modern needle felting craft.

For wet felting, unspun wool is laid out in layers, soap and hot water are sprinkled onto the wool and then the wool is massaged to felt the fibres together. The shape is achieved by massaging the textiles into the required shape.

We have been developing our range of products since we started in 2008 and started marketing the products in 2010.

In the meantime TT and Popit, the two female Lumpkins produced three additions to the Company. Boetjie, Scampie are twins born to TT and Laddie born to Popit in the spring of 2010. They have added their wool to production. In 2011 Daisy was born to Popit and Storm was born to TT. They gave us their beautiful soft lambs wool in 2012.

Meryl, their foster mum, has been on an interesting journey learning to become a felt maker and setting up a business with the aim to bring in enough income to cover the food and veterinary costs of the Lumpkins.

We have enjoyed developing our felting products and are in the process of developing the on-line shop for this website. In the meantime have a look at our gallery below to get an idea of what we make and the sort of prices we charge. If there is anything you want do e-mail me on the feed back page. It normally takes a month to make bespoke orders as I have to juggle those with supplying my market stalls and shop outlets.
