March 2020 Meeting

Those of you who were unable to attend the March meeting, missed a most informative and well-presented talk by Patrick Hoyte about the photographs and photographers of the American Civil War. Patrick explained that he had been interested in the American Civil War for many years, and had visited  a large number of its significant locations. He described how the lengthy times needed for adequate exposures using the methods available at the time meant that "action shots" were out of the question, and that portraits, posed scenes and images of buildings and landscapes were the norm. He also talked about the works of Mathew Brady (who photographed Abraham Lincoln on many occasions) and his assistants including Andrew Gardner who progressed to make successful careers for themselves, and the huge photo archive to which they contributed. A lively and often humerous discussion ended the presentation.

Following refreshments, member's images were displayed and discussed. Unfortunately these were a little thin on the ground this time, so a message to all members- get out there and take some photographs!

The first selection of images are screen captures from Patrick's presentation on the American Civil War.

Ulysses S.Grant

Mobile and tented photographer's studios in the field allowed soldiers to have their portraits taken.

Quality varied with price, two contrasting examples are shown below.

General Ambrose Burnside who made the term "sideburn" famous!
