Wansbeck Gymnastics Club is a voluntary organisation catering for girls only, that has been established for over 30 years at Ashington Leisure Centre. It is affiliated to British Gymnastics (BG) and North of England Gymnastics Association (NEGA)
The club meets on Tuesday and Thursday from 5:30 – 8:30pm and also on Saturday's from 1:30 – 3:30pm.
Membership is drawn from a wide area and has been mainly invited to join, following attendance at Ashington Leisure Centre recreation sessions. We have 7 volunteer coaches who are extremely dedicated and help us provide coaching and competitive opportunities for 49 weeks of the year across all four areas of gymnastics including floor work, beam, bars and vault.
All coaches are trained to British Gymnastics standards and have been CRB checked. The club has been accredited with the British Gymnastics Gym-Mark award indicating that it is ‘safe, effective and child friendly’. It has also received Sport England’s Club-Mark accreditation.
Our aim is to
- Promote skills on Floor Beam, Bars and Vault
- Give children access to regular exercise that they can enjoy
- Benefit from a more active lifestyle
- Develop new skills
- Improve their physical co-ordination
- Build up their strength and confidence
- Work together as a team
We encourage our gymnasts to be involved in all aspects of gymnastics including moving and setting up the equipment helping them understand the important rules of health and safety. The club and recreational group work with over 100 children every week.
The club enter annual regional competitions such as Novice, Intermediate, Pre-elite and Elite and also National Development Programme Grades.
Recreational Gymnastics
The recreational sessions are run by qualified coaches and are aimed at children between the ages of 5 and 17 years. Children who show a particular skills and ability can advance up to the competitive club sessions. This enables the coaches to give them extra coaching and support to further develop their skills.
Ashington Leisure Centre reception staff can advise upon session charges and current availability of the recreational courses and they administer a waiting list as required. These sessions only cater for girls.
Wansbeck Gymnastics Club runs the recreation sessions on behalf of Ashington Leisure Centre. These are held on Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursdays 4:30 – 5:30pm for ages 5-10 and on Wednesdays at 5:30 – 630pm for ages 10+.
Management Committee
We have a management committee who oversee the running of the club who are made up of coaches, parents and members. We run a community focused club encouraging parents and families to become involved in our management committee work.
