This is a free Spanglefish 1 website.

The website dedicated to the surnames:

"Wallator", "Woliter", "Wolleter" (& all other spellings)

This website aims to pull togther all the information I have on the surname Wallator, including all the different spellings recorded (Wallater, Walletter, Walletor, Wolleter, Wollitor, Woliter etc).  I also intend to add new information as it becomes available to me.  The overall aim is to provide a resource for family historians and others interested in discovering more about the name, its origins and the history of the different families.  Essentially it is a single name study.

Since this site is a work in progress, please visit again in the future, and feel free to get in touch.  Not all the information I have is presented here, although I hope to make it all available either here or via links to other sites (e.g. ancestry.co.uk).

My connection

My great grandmother was born with the surname Wallator.  She was the last member of my family to bear the name.  Her family was from Shropshire, England.  It also appears the family was the last in the UK to have the surname with this particular spelling.  Some members of the family emigrated to Canada and the USA, where the name "Wallator" continues to thrive.

The surnames Woliter and Wolleter still survive in the UK.  I have evidence that these names are linked with the surname Wallator. It is difficult to find absolutely conclusive evidence of a direct link to my ancestors, but the evidence available does suggest they are linked through a common ancestor (Thomas Wallator).  It is clear that the Wolleter family in Staffordshire came from Shropshire.  It is almost certain that the alternative spellings arose due to illiteracy - they share the same phonetic characteristics.  I hope this site will help bring together all the available information about the different Wallator family surname branches.

While my ancestors came from Shropshire, further research has made it clear that other people with these surnames were also living in other UK counties in the 18th and 19th centuries, particularly Staffordshire, Warwickshire and Middlesex.

Note on confidentiality

The information on this site will only concern family members who are deceased, in order to protect the confidentiality of living members.  However, if I am asked to publish information about living members I may agree to do so, provided I have the express permission of those concerned.

Please feel free to contact me if you have information to add or if you think I may be able to help you with your family history.  Please use the Feedback page.
