Lieutenant J.K. Duncan

Patrick Vanleene wrote, 30 October 2023 :-

I am a Belgian First World War researcher and researched James Kirk Duncan who is mentioned both on the Cenotaph in Zambia and on the Monument for the Missing in Nieuwpoort, Belgium.

Rifleman Duncan died shortly after midnight of July 10 , 1917 in a raid on the German lines by 20 Rhodesians of the King's Own Rifle Corps.

I quote the war diary of he regiment:-

"A raiding party of Rhodesians under 2nd Lt T P McDowell raided the enemy trenches by BLACK DUNE at 11.30pm. They only found one marine who they brought back. He was killed by an enemy shell on our wire, the same shell that wounded 2nd Lt T P McDowell and seven of ours & killed Rifleman DUNCAN."

I thought you might like to know this as Nieuwpoort is not mentioned on the Cenotaph.
