AUTHOR AND HISTORIAN

Tilly Losch ( 1903-1975) the Austrian born dancer, choreographer, actress and painter lived and worked for most of her life in USA and Britain, although she began her career in her native Austria. Tilly ( born Ottilie Ethel  Leopoldine Losch)   is not yet the subject  of a full length  published biography, especially one that draws  on her personal papers and memorabilia at The University of Binghamton, New York State, USA.  To help to fill this gap, in 2013, William Cross, the British Society biographer compiled a long biographical sketch  of Tilly’s life and times  for his book  “ Catherine and Tilly: Porchey Carnarvon’s Two Duped Wives” The Tragic Tales of the Sixth Countesses of Carnarvon.  This new shorter compilation "Tilly Losch  'Schlagobers' Sweet Fragments From Her Life"  adds  a few further facts and stories recording parts of Tilly’s remarkable life and some of the people she knew.

Describing herself as an 'Actress, Dancer and Artist', ( which is the inscription on her grave stone )   Tilly’s story and her legacy deserves to be much better known about across the globe.  The UK based  biographer William Cross, FSA Scot, author of eight books on  men and woman ( mainly whose stories have been overlooked ) plans to add other titles to this end about Tilly Losch ( who was briefly the Sixth Countess of Carnarvon).    For further details contact the Author William Cross, by e-mail williecross@aol.com

What the Papers Say About Lady Almina Carnarvon

NEW YORK TIMES

5 February 2012

Almina was a woman of great charm and courage, and the family universally beloved.

This account differs somewhat from that in a biography of Lady Almina that came out last year. William P. Cross’s “Life and Secrets of Almina Carnarvon” tells of a woman who traded her money for a prestigious but arid marriage, took lovers young and old (including her husband’s best man) and burned through Rothschild’s dowry, leaving her feckless son enraged and penniless when he finally inherited the estate. Lady Almina did, in fact, open her home to the wounded, and went on to open a series of tony nursing homes (and discreet abortion clinics) for the rich and famous. But the homes never paid for themselves, and she and her second husband, a military officer named Ian Dennistoun, whom she married a few months after Lord Carnarvon’s death, ended up in bankruptcy court. Almina died in greatly reduced circumstances in Bristol in 1969, at the age of 93.

 The Independent

...Who can blame Fiona Carnarvon for battering out a book about  Lady Almina.........". But it's harder to ignore her glossing over all the embarrassing sexy details about Almina Carnarvon......"   " Though she does describe how Almina was the illegitimate daughter of Alfred de Rothschild, she doesn't go into her reputation for promiscuity as chronicled by William Cross in his book, The Life and Secrets of Almina Carnarvon. Best leave those family skeletons in the cup- board, eh?

Matthew Bell: The IoS Diary (25/09/11) The Independent

The Guardian

The author of " Lady Almina"  can readily be excused for wishing to exploit the link to Downton Abbey. It's less easy to exonerate her decision to ignore William Cross's startling account (in The Life and Secrets of Almina Carnarvon) of a promiscuous and ambitious – yet admirable – woman whose calamitous fall makes for more compelling reading....

Almina's Untold Story

Latest  News: The Life and Secrets of  Almina Carnarvon is now available by contacting William Cross, FSA Scot

Almina, Countess of Carnarvon, 1876-1969, is largely overlooked as an achiever in her own right. As frequently happens with the wives of distinguished men, the woman’s story is relegated to a minor, supporting role. Almina Carnarvon lived for almost fifty years after the 5th Earl of Carnarvon’s demise in Egypt  from the infamous insect bite.   The full details of her activities in this long span are largely untold, as are the stories and facts about her long, chequered life, before, during and after she met and married the 5th Lord Carnarvon. In the years following the discovery in Egypt, Almina remarried and became the proprietor of a series of lavish nursing homes, treating the famous. During the Second World War, with her finances strained, she abandoned everything to retreat to the West Country of England where she continued as indefatigable as ever until her death in 1969.

Almina's story is revealed in a full length biography entitled "The Life and Secrets of Almina Carnarvon" by William Cross, FSA Scot.  Contact Will by e-mail for further details  williecross@aol.com

“an explosive new biography of Highclere’s chatelaine…”
“a rigorously-researched account which itself is worthy of a film…..  !”
Christopher Wilson in The Daily Telegraph
”Almina enjoyed looking after invalids……She loved having control over men. She was an arch-manipulator……”. Annabel Venning in The Daily Mail.
“The biography is the definitive work documenting Almina’s life.  Such is the depth of research that it is likely to retain this accolade forever.
………..make sure you read the Epilogue…..  It is potentially the most explosive part of the book.   ” Kate Phizackerley

Life and Secrets of Almina Carnarnon: Record Price Asked On Amazon.com $129.92

My hat goes off to the enterprising seller on Amazon.com  who is offering a copy of " The Life and Secrets of Almina Carnarvon" for the sum of

$129.92.......A wonderful record so far!  I'm flattered and impressed and have advised all my  American customers to sell, sell, sell......

I predicted the book would ultimately find its rightful price!

What might this book be worth in 2012 on the 90th anniversary of Tutankhamun's find or 2022 on the Boy King's centenary?  It was afterall Almina Carnarvon who appealed to Alfred de Rothschild for funding for Lord Carnarvon's excavations in the Valley of the Kings which led to the great discovery of the century, in 1922.

Check out Amazon.com for yourself.

Matters remain somewhat calmer on Amazon uk, but time is running out if you want a copy of the book at reasoanble price.  The Second Edition is available from 15 September.......but there are limited supplies.

Regards to All, Will
