Rules of the road

by Martin Cassini - 14:53 on 05 March 2009

The rules of the road detract from (correct) conduct based on context and commonsense. The traffic control system grew up piecemeal and is based on kneejerk conjecture rather than evidence-based science. It defies basic safety principles by turning roads into battlegrounds for gaps and green time. It ignores civilised values of equal rights and responsibilities. It neglects our greatest resource: the human brain, which has an instinct for co-operation and highly-evolved skills for negotiating movement. The system feeds an unproductive control and enforcement industry. Economically, socially, environmentally, psychologically, aesthetically - does the traffic control system confer any benefits at all? More at www.fitroads.org and http://amberlight.ning.com
