The Funky Diabetic

On one of my regular walks about the Neath area I came across an interesting and new piece of graffiti several weeks ago. Here it is, and I'll reveal where you can find it at the end of this article:

I had to look up what it meant, using the clues within it. It turns out that A Tribe Called Quest is an American hip-hop trio that was formed in 1985 and was composed of MC and producer Q-Tip, MC Phife Dawg aka Phife Diggy, and DJ and producer Ali Shaheed Muhammad. Hip-hop is something that I know virtually nothing about, nor at my time of life do I want to. Instead I much prefer to listen to classics from the 60's, 70's and 80's. The reason the graffiti has been drawn is that Phife Dawg aka Phife Diggy was also known as The Funky Diabetic and actually died from diabetes related complications on 22 March 2016, aged just 45. So the artwork was painted very soon after his death presumably by a fan or fans of A Tribe called Quest.

Have a look at an actual photograph of Phife and compare it to the graffiti. Someone has a talent there - it's urban art alright.

So where can you find it? Well, it's painted on the underpass of the A465 road, on the Tennant Canal near the Neath Abbey Tesco's. Knocks spots off the usual graffiti adorning bridges and underpasses in Neath. My compliments to whoever did it. I'd prefer to see nothing at all painted on such things but if it is going to happen at least I can hopefully appreciate the work and talent that went into this one.
