Scottish Coalition Addressing Factory Fish Farming

Welcome to SCAFFF

SCAFFF is an open group of individuals and groups who are either opposed to the proliferation and expansion of 'factory' style industrial scale aquaculture or opposed to the industry's unsustainable methods.

A typical salmon farm instalation, note floating pipes etc.

Our ideal aim is to have commercial salmon production which;
• Does Not involve the killing or harassment of marine animals including seals, whales,  dolphins, porpoise, otters and birds,
• Does Not contribute to the over-exploitation of Global fisheries in order to produce fish feed.
• Does Not obstruct or hinder the migration of wild Salmonids,
• Does Not pollute the seas with parasites, disease, chemicals and detritus,
• Does give the farmed salmon the very best possible welfare conditions from hatchery to slaughter and
• Does create real, properly-paid long-term jobs in rural communities.

Currently we have concentrated our efforts on salmon due to the unprecedented growth in both new salmon farms and the increase in bio-mass of existing salmon farms in Scotland. Our concerns include the shooting of seals when non-lethal anti-predation methods exist; the extensive use, even apparently preferred methods of acoustic deterrents by government agencies, which are known to affect cetaceans with a poorly understood effect on seals; combined with the industry's secretive approach and often self regulated methods of operation.

The 'Blog' page is provided as an open forum for people to post threads about their experiences, concerns and anything related to the marine environment especially in relation to existing, new and increased bio-mass aquaculture applications.

The 'Library' page will house useful documents, which might be of use to individuals/groups, in presenting a case to communities, councillors, planners and alike.
