Welcome to Sarum Greenwood

I have designed this website as an information source on the work that I carry out and the services I can provide as well as a general source of information on trees, their management and timber use, etc. This is obviously a massive topic so only a brief overview can be given in the space available. I have tried to present it to those that know little of the subject, so forgive me if you are more knowledgeable. Where possible I have provided links that can give you more information.

There are plenty of images on this site. Just click on the category on the left and then scroll down to get the images. If you click on any of the images they will enlarge.

For those of you who don't know me, I'll give you some background information and then if you would like to check the menu to the left, hopefully you will find what you are looking for. If you don't, just send me an e-mail and I'll get back to you as soon as I can. When in the woods I don't have my phone on all the time so please leave me a message or send me an e-mail. It may sometimes take me a few days to respond depending on what projects I am involved in, so please be patient. When you are managing trees that can grow for a hundred years or more, a couple of days seems insignificant to me.

I have an interest in most things to do with trees, from planting, management, harvesting and timber utilisation. I started Sarum Greenwood after running my own successful engineering company converting vehicles for the disabled. After 25 years in a factory/office environment, I really wanted to work outdoors and do whenever I can although administration is a necessary part of all businesses. I started working with green timber (unseasoned timber/wood) some fifteen years ago and now make a range of items. I prefer working using traditional hand tools and methods, when appropriate, and work in the woods when I can. I run Greenwood courses during the summer usually on a personal level with only one or two participants and can teach at any level from complete beginner to those that are skilled but wish to learn new methods or techniques. Leading on from the Green woodwork, I started coppicing and hedgelaying and I went on to complete a three year foundation degree in Lowland Woodland Management at Sparsholt. This comprehensive course covered all aspects of sustainasble woodland management, and encompassed the core objectives of the environmental, economic and social functions necessary for sustainability. Whatever your reason for owning a woodland, it is important that it is managed otherwise it will deteriorate over time. It is also vitally impotant that it is managed correctly and sympatetically and within accepted Standards and Guidelines.  So if you are lucky enough to own your own woodland and need advice on all aspects of management, please let me know.
