Sunderland hand central role to striker

Sunderland boss Gus Poyet is to hand loan star Fabio Borini the central striker's role in the run in to the end of the season.

The on-loan Liverpool man has normally been used out wide but he played through the middle in the Capital One Cup final defeat to Manchester City and shone for the Black Cats.

With fellow strikers Steven Fletcher and Jozy Altidore struggling for goals, Poyet has revealed that Borini may well be used down the middle for the rest of the campaign.

Poyet said: "Fabio is a player that if you want to create personality in terms of how he comes every day to training, what time he is out ready to train, how he trains, how he prepares for games, how he plays the games, what he gives you, he's the type of player you would like to have in your squad all the time, playing or not.

"I think he was desperate to play up front. For some reason every time I played him up front, something happened and he went back - you can go back to Hull [in November last year] when we got the two players sent off, or other games when we didn't really perform.

"He took his chance and he proved that in certain moments when we have to play the way we played against City, he can be very important for us.

"Then it will depend on the game, how we play or who is playing, but I think it was one of the best decisions we have made in the final."
