Poyet: Brown can go into his 40's

Sunderland boss Gus Poyet has told Wes Brown to forget about retirement.

Poyet is convinced the veteran centre-back has still got plenty of miles left on the clock before he has to hang up his boots.

The 34-year-old is making up for lost time after returning earlier this season from a near two-season injury absence, when persistent knee problems looked likely to force the former England international to call it a day.

Poyet said: “If we keep playing the way we’re playing, then I think that Wes could continue playing with us until he is 40. He has a way of playing, and when you are so ahead of the game like he is, if you keep yourself just generally fit, then you can go on.

“Does he want to play until he’s 40? I don’t know, but maybe he will. Sunderland fans know all about Kevin Phillips and how he’s played on after reaching 40. So why not Wes? He plays with him mind, with cleverness and intelligence.”
