Poyet to change role of Sunderland midfielder Ki

Sunderland boss Gus Poyet says they are ready to change the role of Ki Sung-yueng, currently on a season long loan from Swansea.

Ki normally likes to sit in front of the back four and bring the ball forward, but Poyet feels he would be better deployed further up the pitch, which they did with him at West Ham, with Lee Cattermole coming in behind him.

"We had a chat with Ki. He prefers to play in front of the back four, but of course you need to work a lot defensively, and he's not that type of player," said Poyet.

"So we said to him that we'd give him a chance to play forward. He can pass the ball, he's not the type of player where the ball is flying over his head, it could be interesting for us if he plays there again, it could be an option for us."

Sunderland are keen to tie up a permanent deal for Ki, but Poyet added: "It's not in our hands, at the moment. It's up to Swansea and not up to us."
