Poyet to be named Sunderland manager?

Uruguayan leads the race to take over from Paolo Di Canio as Sunderland boss.

Former Brighton boss Gus Poyet is reportedly set to be announced as Sunderland’s new manager according to reports in Italy.

The 45-year-old Uruguayan is now the odds on favorite with many bookmakers to replace Paolo Di Canio, who was axed earlier this week just 5 matches into the new Premier League season.

Poyet has pulled out of a number of media commitments in recent days, fueling speculation that he is in talks with the Stadium of Light side with the likes of Roberto Di Matteo, Tony Pulis, Steve McClaren and Gianfranco Zola also said to be in the running to fill the Black Cats managerial post.

The former Chelsea and Tottenham midfielder left Brighton in June after 3 and a half years at the club, helping Brigton win the League 1 title before guiding them to the play-offs last term before seemingly falling out with the South Coast side’s board.
