Di Canio is convinced Steven Fletcher and Jozy Altidore will work

Sunderland boss Paolo di Canio is convinced the strike partnership of Steven Fletcher and Jozy Altidore will work.

Di Canio is confident the partnership can work, once the two English-speaking forwards start to communicate and understand each other’s game.

Di Canio told the Daily Mail: "They can work together if they try to collaborate. They have desire, you see it straight away with Fletcher he is a competitive guy, he puts his opponents in trouble and the other one, Jozy, can cause problem to attack the space.

"They are two players who can be the top striker, but they can work together and in the way we play we can get the ball to them in a different manner.

"They have quality, knowledge and the physical presence to play together. It will be more difficult if they don’t speak and I can try to persuade my players to speak more. If they don’t get closer in speaking even before the game, so they know what is going on with the ball and with other players, then they will collaborate.

"It was their first game and first time together but they have to push themselves forward and get closer together so they talk and gel, but that is the same throughout the team.

"They don’t know each other yet. They are crucial footballers and they can be crucial together. They have to understand during the season they can share the satisfaction and one can help the other one to score a goal. If we can help those two obviously it will mean the squad has the benefits."
