Former Sunderland player, manager, chairman and director Niall Quinn is to be awarded the freedom of the City of Sunderland, reports SAFC.com

The decision was taken by members of Sunderland City Council’s Cabinet in recognition of the 46-year-old’s work.

Quinn carried out regular community activity across the city during both his time as a player and in staff roles.

He also donated the proceeds of his testimonial game to charity in 2002.

The freedom of the city is set to be conferred on November 11.
