Radio Ga Ga
01 April 2010

No, we're not singing along with the old hit from Queen, nor are we looking at the latest outrageous costume from current Brit-winning songstress, Lady GaGa.

What we are talking about here is our need to replace our ageing fleet of two-way radios.  REVCOM has been going since 1987, and our team was previously part of the US-based REACT organisation before that, meaning that we have now been serving the local community  since 1981. Eighteen years ago, the Lincoln team was the first REVCOM team in the country to use FM instead of the AM standard that had been in use since the early REACT times.  Now, there are only a small handful of AM sets used in the country and they are probably around 40 or so years old!!  Unfortunately, our FM sets were themselves second-hand  when we bought them and are now about 30 years old.  Despite the gallant efforts of our radio engineers, the sets are coming rapidly to the end of their useful working lives and parts are becoming almost impossible to obtain.  It will be possible to re-use some parts as the "worst" of our sets are scrapped but of course this is reducing the total number we have and so we have embarked on a programme to replace our radios with brand-new equipment that will last us for many years and enable us to continue to give the service we currently offer.  That we can buy an initial small number from existing funds is without question, but to replace our current 11 sets will take several thousand pounds in total. That's why we are now seeking funding from external sources so that the replacement programme can take place over a shorter timespan. Each set will cost around £250 so every penny we can raise will help.
