Common Trade Scams

There are many trade scams throughout the Marketplace. This section will outline a couple of the most well-known ones, and how to detect if someone is trying to scam you. Most of the Trade Scams listed will be 'generalised' - meaning you can fit an item of your own into the description.

Unfermented Wine:

Unfermented Wine is NOT a Rare Item - it is simply regular wine, that has not yet been fermented. To make Unfermented Wine, simply add Grapes to a Jug of water, and it will become unfermented Wine for a few moments, then it will either turn into Good or Bad Wine.

Wine of Zamorak:

Wine of Zamorak is NOT a Rare Item. It is simply a second Ingredient in the Members Only, Ranging Potion. They can sell for 3k each max. They have no use whatsoever on F2P.

Free Trimming:

There is no such thing as trimming. Many people try to scam others by taking their armour, saying that they can trim it. This is Impossible so don't fall for it.

New Items:

Whenever Jagex add a new quest, or new Items to the game, the price is generally VERY high. If you are money-cautious, do NOT buy any new items until at least a week or two after they have been released. It is a massive waste of money! The first day, it could be worth 900k, then two days later, only 200k. So wait until the price has dropped until you buy one!

Trade Screen Scams:

If you see someone selling something for cheap, automatically be suspicious. You can still go over and trade with them, but don't accept until you're 100% sure that your paying for the right item. Loads of people fall for this, when the other trade takes away some of the items he origonally put up.
Example: This guy trades me, puts up 2k coal. He then says "200k", I put up 200k. Everything seems ok, until I reached the final Screen. There was only 200 coal, instead of 2,000. DECLINE the trade!
Do NOT fall for it. If someone offers to buy a rare item of yours, for a ridiculously high amount of gp, be cautious. If this person puts up say, 4,000,000gp. Ask him to take 1gp off. If he doesn't, he is probably a scammer, as most scammers somehow remove a zero or two from the end of the money value.

Money Change Scam:

The trick by which someone will offer you a large sum of money for an item, and then they will add another item to the trade, and magically, the large sum of money has exeptionaly decreased. Example:
Person A is selling a Saradomin full helm.
Person B puts up 1000k.
Person B then reduces the amount of money to 10000, adding another item at the exact same time.
Person A Accepts. Notices the change, and declines.
Watch out for this scam. Always check the second screen. If you are dealling with thousands, you will see ----k, if you are dealling with millions, you will see ----M. Always check the amount of money on the second screen, as it may not be visible on the first.

Rare Items? I think not!

In runescape, there are many items you will not come across. People use these items to scam others. Be wary. If you don't know what you're buying, then do not buy it!
These items are:
4-dose potions, Charcoal, Machette, Crushed gemstone, Spinach roll, Elemental shields, Paramaya Inn ticket, Gnome ball, Pete's candlestick, Toy horses, Unfermented wine, Bad wine, Shanty Disclaimer, Half-pizzas, Hollow Reed, Colored gloves, Gold nuggets, Black items, Black Claws, Black Scimitar, The Shield of Arrav - both halves, Eye patches, Lit arrows, Black staffs, Shade robes, Sliced bananas, SGG (Short-Green-Guy -Gnome Drink-, Snelms (Snail Helmets), Bark, Cleaning Cloth, Palm leaves, Flametaer Hammers, Grog, Karamja Rum, Vodka.

Multi-scam:

This will often occur in a crowded marketplace.
Person A and B are friends; Person C is a regular player.
Person B: 'Selling Paramaya Inn ticket 200k'
Person A: 'Buying Paramaya Inn ticket 2Mil!!'
Person C thinks: *Omg! If I buy this from Person B for 200k, and sell for 2Mil, I can make 1.8M profit!!!'
Person C: Trades Person A; buys Paramaya Inn ticket; trades with Person A; Person A declines and logs off.
This commonly happens with the items listed under the above scam.

Trust Scam:

This envolves one scout and one scammer.
The scout would be going around trying to find clan members. They would be looking for people with certain armor or things such as rune or addy. They bring you to an isolated and secluded area.
The scammer would then ask you if you would like to join their clan. Often, they would say, if you join the clan, you will get full rune free. They would show you the rune in a trade.
Then, both the scammer and the scout would ask you to do their trust test. The scammer says that he must take everything off and give it to the next person. Then the next person would wear it and give it back. Both the scammer and the scout do the act of trading and giving back.
Now, they ask you to do it. You take off your armor and trade it to them and they don't trade it back to you.

'Auction' Scam:

This is another common scam often occurring in Varrock World 1.

First off there is this person who says 'Free Santa' or something like that. Then he will stir up a crowd and get them to gather around a certain area.
He would say the person who gives me the best stuff gets my Santa. He would accept small trades of like 5 - 6 gold and he would return them. When the people get really desperate over the item, they would go and give more valuable stuff like rune picks and stuff.
However, the scammer won't give this back. He will just keep the items to himself.

Item Swap:
Person A: Selling 5000 Yew logs for 100gp ea!!
Person B thinks: *Omg, cheap!*
Person B trades Person A
Person A puts up 5,000 Yew logs, asking person B to hurry as they have to go.
Person B puts up the money; Person A declines, and says "Oops"
They trade again, Person B puts up the money, Person A puts up a DIFFERENT type of log; Person B accepts without checking the trade screen - Person B has been scammed, Person A logs out.
This often occurs with logs, noted Armour and weapons.
