Portree Primary School’s success at the annual continued when they took home the P7 (& under) shield on Saturday 21 September 2013.
The team set off at midday on Friday, with pupils staying overnight at the homes of the local team. All the pupils were well looked after by the local families and friendships were developed which will last long into the future.
There were seven teams competing in a very well organised tournament, with Newtonmore also joining Portree to bolster the presence from the North.
Portree started brightly and from a very early stage established themselves as one of the favourites. The squad of eight players was rotated regularly during each game, using the rolling sub rule, and this allowed Portree kept up a very high pace throughout each game. The skill displayed by the whole team was commented on by several of the opposition coaches. Every player kept to the game plan and played as a tight unit, with one touch shinty and good positional play leaving every other team struggling to keep up. Portree eventually ran out winners of the league and progressed straight to the final having scored 26 goals without reply.
The second and third placed teams, Glasgow Gaels and Aberdour, then played a semi final with Aberdour winning a close game to meet Portree in the final. Portree kept up the same tempo in the final and ran out 4-0 winners, meaning that they went through the entire tournament without losing a goal.
Every player produced a great display in every single game. Defenders Jamie Gillies and Ross Gordon were solid at the back and rarely gave their opposition a look at the ball. Conor Gilpin and Bailey Hallas, rotating in midfield, dominated each game with fast, strong play and real energy. Mark MacQueen, Martin Pringle and Ryan MacAskill linked exceptionally well in the forward line, scoring a lot of good goals with some very clever movement and passing. Murphy Henderson, although rarely tested, was always calm and reliable in goal; even pitching in with a goal at the other end against Milngavie & Bearsden.
Portree captain, Martin Pringle, lifted the shield to a lot of appreciative applause from the large crowd assembled at the end of the tournament.
To round off a perfect day, Connor Gilpin won the keepy-up competition with an incredible 194 touches in a minute!
