So Foul and Fair Day. OS10012345/02NH Our Price £10.00 SO FOUL AND FAIR A DAY. A HISTORY OF SCOTLAND’S WEATHER AND CLIMATE. ALISTAIR DAWSON Birlinn, 1st Ed 2009, 230pp Inc Index and further reading Lge, P.Back. About the book: Climate change is one of the most serious issues that faces the human race, but how important have climate conditions and weather been in the past? Alastair Dawson considers this question as he traces the history of climate conditions and weather in Scotland, showing that dramatic changes have played an important part in the shaping of Scotland's story, a fact that is often overlooked by professional historians. He discusses the key lessons to be learned from the past, providing pointers to the future and new meanings to the terms 'climate change' and 'global warming'. This is a fascinating and thoughtful book, and an invaluable reference for all those interested in climate change.

The Lighthouses of Ireland OS10012662/03/NH Our Price £15.00 The Lighthouses of Ireland, A Personal History Taylor Collins Press 1st ED, 2004 178pp Inc Epilogue. VGC D-J About the book: Richard Taylor was a lighthouse technician for 44 years during which he visited and worked on all 86 Irish lighthouses. He is uniquely qualified to write this personal history-cum-guide. He describes the lighthouses and their history and captures the unique way of life of the lighthouse keepers and their families, largely unknown and ignored until now and, with automation, sadly no longer extant. The result is a book embellished with anecdotes and hair-raising tales of getting on to lighthouses, time spent there, often weeks on end, and getting off lighthouses. So starting with the Baily in Howth the author takes us in a clockwise direction around the coast of the 32 counties.

In Harm's Way Mofa H. Our Price £3.50 Stanton Bantum Press 2001,333pp.Paperbook. About the book: On July 26, 1945, the heavy cruiser Indianapolis steamed into port at the Pacific island of Tinian, carrying a cargo that would end World War II: the uranium that would be dropped on Hiroshima just three weeks later. Having delivered its load without incident, Indianapolis moved on toward the Philippines to join the great armada moving in on Japan. Though intelligence reports assured Captain Charles McVay that the route from Guam to Leyte was safe, there were Japanese submarines active in the area. On the night of July 29, having detected with sonar the clinking of dishes aboard the Indianapolis from a distance of more than a dozen miles, the submarine I-58 sank the American ship, killing nearly 900 sailors in the explosion and its terrible aftermath. Captain McVay was quickly court-martialed for having failed to follow evasive maneuvers, "the first captain in the history of the U.S. Navy," Doug Stanton observes, "to be court-martialed subsequent to losing his ship in an act of war." Although the sailors under his command would insist that McVay had been scapegoated, and although I-58's commander testified before the court that "he would have sunk the Indianapolis no matter what course she was on," McVay was never able to clear his name. He committed suicide in 1968. Stanton captures the drama of these events in his vigorous narrative, which augments and updates Richard Newcomb's Abandon Ship!. Stanton observes that although McVay was exonerated by an act of Congress in 2000, the conviction still stands in Navy records. Stanton's book makes a powerful case for why that conviction should be overturned, and why the captain and crew of the Indianapolis deserve honor. --Gregory McName

Faith and Duty Mofa F Our Price £5.00 Faith and Duty Curtis Andre Deutsch 1998,302pp inc Epilogue. About the book: Nick Curtis is one of the most highly decorated British soldiers ever to serve in Northern Ireland. In this compelling and unique book he graphically portrays his experiences in the Province during the turbulent years of 1969 1976. After surviving nearly 2,000 fired rounds, Curtis's duty as a uniformed officer ended and he was awarded the Military Medal for acts of bravery in the field. But he returned to the Province to become a key figure in undercover operations, liaising closely with such figures as Captain Robert Nairac, himself a legend for his undercover work among the IRA. Hard-hitting, uncompromising and extraordinarily frank, Nick Curtis' dramatic account of his life in Northern Ireland encompasses the extremities of urban civil war, the intrigues of undercover operations, and the political machinations that helped to form both.

The Runagates club Mofa 78505NH Our Price £15.00 Buchan Hodder 1941,331pp, VGC D-J Yellow Cover. This compilation of stories brings the reader directly into the atmosphere of the earliest of gentlemen's clubs as they were after the First World War. The Runagates Club is peopled by various main characters from John Buchan's other novels. The premise of this collection is that, once a month, a member of the Club (a 1930s London dining club for gentlemen) takes his turn to entertain the company with a narrative. These twelve compact tales run the gamut of what John Buchan is good at writing: psychological intrigue, fleet-footed escapes, as well as brushes with the terrifying power of pagan ritual, no longer hoary with age. Colored by military experience and wide-ranging travel descriptions, these tales vividly evoke locations and time settings very distant from the present. The stories which skirt the supernatural are made more striking by the crisp, commonsense language used to describe scenes and events reeking of unnatural power. The premises of some of these stories are based on opinions of race and character as inherited stereotypes, which mix oddly with today's philosophies of equality and political correctness. At the same time, these premises give these stories a backdrop of moral certainty against which Buchan paints colorful and fantastic adventures. These short and exciting episodes provide a rich escape into hair-raising events described in the dimly-lit comfort of intelligent companionship. For those readers familiar with Buchan's longer novels, this work provides an extra episode in the lives of the various heroes, which is satisfying to those who have become attached to the likes of Sandy Arbuthnot, Lord Lamancha, and Lord Burminster.

Shipbuilding in Waterford 1820 /1882 Nos/10012663/10nh Shipbuilding in Waterford 1820-1882,a historial techaical and pictorial study Irish Our Price £12.00 Wordwell m1st ed 2001,272pp Inc index vgc Change shipping destination/currency Shipping prices may be approximate. Please verify cost before checkout. About the book: Bill Irish's story of the Waterford shipyards highlights the role of Quakers as entrepreneurs, and particularly as risk-takers, who were willing to fund new enterprises, providing rare economic relief to underdeveloped areas without the guarantee of a good return on their investment - a rarity in Ireland, and a glimpse or reminder of what might have been. Their shipbuilding ventures in Waterford were as technologically advanced as any similar development of the day, and they certainly primed and brought to fruition the industrial revolution on the banks of the Suir.
The book is illustrated with a large range of line etchings, lithographs, oil paintings, photographs, movie stills and video images, which on their own would constitute an invaluable historical record; coupled with the meticulously researched text, they make this volume an important addition to our understanding of Ireland's industrial and cultural history
