If only the Great British public knew half of what their police officers got up to in days gone by there would probably have been even more rioting on the streets!

Me (that's me in the above photo) and my mate Bob were on the beat in Liverpool spanning 3 decades from the 1970's and without a sense of humour it would have been hard to survive. As Bob used to say, 'If ye' don't laugh ye'll bloody cry!'

We had to rule our 'beat' with rods of iron, never letting the 'bucks' see any sign of weakness, and meeting danger and violence head on!

And it was almost as bad with fellow police officers - any sign of weakness and you would become the brunt of ongoing 'stick' and practical jokes for years to come!
