Peaslake MTBO

Last Sunday saw me (Toby) and Simon enter as Team Dorking Cocks in the latest Peaslake MTBO event. Having had a decent ride on the Saturday legs were a little tired as we met up at the registration point in Peaslake.

I had decieded to give it a go on my rigid singlespeed whilst Simon had opted for his xc 29er hardtail. We checked the map, planned a route and headed on our way. Basic plan was to clear all the Holmbury hill checkpoints then move on to Leith, sweep all those up then dash via road around to Shere and make our way up Winterfold and finally Pitch Hill before dropping back to the finish in Peaslake.

All went rather well really, no getting lost, no mechanicals just tiredness towards the end. The last checkpoint we did was at the summit of Pitch Hill and we rushed back down to check in with 7 minutes spare and all but 1 of the checkpoints gathered (we just missed out on check point 1).

On arriving and seeing our score on the computer screen we were 1st team but had a solo rider ahead of us who had managed all the checkpoints and half hour quicker than us, that is some going so really well done to them.

By the time everyone was back we had dropped to 4th overall behind 3 seperate soloists who all managed to get all the checkpoints and finished on level points with the next team who were just 4 minutes behind us.

Good event as always, bit disapointed not to have got all the checkpoints but very pleased to have won - our prize ! not that it matters at all was quite funny, one tyre, useless to Simon as it was a 26" and all his bikes are 29ers, and I really didn't want it as it wasn't tubeless. Eventually we decided that Simons son Morgan should be the lucky recipient.

Thanks to all for organising the event and to the weather for being so good. Will I do it again ? well yes, but not necesserily the next one but just when the timing suits.
