Dorking to Brighton off road
Saturday saw myself, George, Antony & Simon complete a 61 mile route from Dorking to Brighton ending with Fish n Chips on a packed beach and a cooling beer in a pub near the station. The route took us over the tops of Leith, Holmbury & Pitch Hills with some nice sections of singletrack mixed in. A slight mechanical for Simom and a puncture for George delayed our progress accross Leith hill but from then on it was a trouble free run over to Winterfold and eventually to the Downs Link which we joined at Cranleigh. Even before reaching Baynards George suffered another puncture and the planned tea stop at the cafe near there never happened as the cafe has closed down. With the puncture mended we continued on our way which passed quickly and without incident all the way to Southwater where we stopped for tea, and ice cream at the country park. Suitably refreshed we continued on our way eating up the miles at a steady but not quite flat out pace. The villages come and go quickly and within no time the South Downs rear into view and the railway line eventually peters out and is replaced with bridleway to the link with the South Downs. Some of us were getting tired legs by now, not directly as a result of this trip but by the combined efforts of a lot of riding this month, the accent of trueleigh hill was quite tough but dispatched without incident and after re grouping at the top we set of over the nexttwo or 3 undulations to arrive at Devils Dyke. Here we decided to have a refreshing beer stop and chat to a couple of girls we'd just passed on that final bit of track. After a while we once again saddled up and followed the Dyke road back to the A27 junction before heading sharply down into hove setting of the 30mph speed limit signs. A direct route past the greyhound Stadium eventually brought us out at the King Alfred Sports Centre and a final pootle along the esplnade to central Brighton.
