Wedneday 14th December 2011

Well, that was a good ride right up until we arrived at the William 4th Little London. Was a steady pace accross the 'Abinger Roughs then 'Cow Shit Field', even the climb up to Peaslake was in pretty good nick. The route up to the top of Holmbury hill was also a nice one and one that we haven't done for a while.

The new path before 'Golden Birdies' and then of course 'Golden Birdies' itself rode well (if only my chain hadn't jumped off) especially for Duncan who unwisely decided to stop right next to a puddle.

From Peaslake it was a steady climb up to the top of Pitch Hill and then for the 1st time (2nd for a few of us) we went down the new trail next to Wedgie (missing out the jumps of course) - loving the tight turns near the top.

From here it was over to Winterfold then down to Farley Green and eventually the pub stop at William 4th Little London. Now we have been stopping off here for years, well over ten years infact and have always stacked our bikes out front and never has anyone said a word - that is until last night.

Unfortunatley the 'Landlord' seemed to take an instant disliking to us and was outright, rude, even abusive to an extent with his language - apparently the bikes were damaging his wall (just one handlebar end was actually touching the wall) and blocking the walkway (the one he just very easily walked up to have a right moan at us)

Apparantly this man has been the 'Landlord' there for the past 10 years, funny how we have never seen him before and how none of his staff or customers have ever mentioned to us about the bikes being in the way. You see, this is no problem and we were happy to move them around the back of the pub its just such a shame that the 'Landlord' couldn't have spoken to us nicely rather than fly straight off the handle.

Real shame as we all really like the pub but the thought of putting money his way in the future isn't very appealing at all, if he'd just talked to us pleasently as humans it would have been ok but he and really did come accross very high and mighty and made it perfectly clear that Mountain Bikers really aren't welcome (by him at least, the rest of the staff seemed friendly enough).

Anyway, we had just the one pint there as a couple of us had already ordered before the landlord started having a moan but then decided to leave. A 2nd pint was still required thou so we opted to pay a 1st (for a Wednesday night ride) visit to the Abinger Arms on the way home. Have to say I'm not a big fan of that pub but to be fair they couldn't have been more friendly, the beer was good, and cheap and they even gave us some free food left over from the quiz night that was going on in the main bar so a big thumbs up to them and I'm sure a few more visits there will be on the cards in the future.

So, after 24 miles we eventually arrived back at Westcott, all good fun.
