Snow

Well, not being one to let a bit of snow get in the way of a good thing I have managed 2 rides this week. On Tuesday it was just George and myself who couldn't resist venturing out for a pint at the Plough, having met up at the old Holly and Laurel we ventured up through Redlands wood. Needless to say, the snow was thick and hard going, George had to walk a small section as he was on the singlespeed whilst I just about kept it going thanks to my Alfine hub.

All in all it was good fun but one beer seemed to lead to another and then another so by the time I was heading back home through Redlands things were interesting. Still, I made it back in one piece and enjoyed it so much more of the same was planned for the following evening.

So, on Wednesday I made my way up to the Plough once again where I met up with George, Mike, Charlie & John. After a beer there Charlie, John and myself headed off to the Stephan Langton at Friday Street in search of more beer. The run down summer lightning was fab and after winding around a bit we made our way to Wildwood. This trail too was very good and we were the 1st to ride it, coming out at Friday Street we were disappointed to find the pub was closed.Charlie and me headed back to the Plough via Leith Hill Tower whilst good old John opted to go to the Kings Head at Holmbury and then return alone to the Plough.

Charlie and me made it back fine and as we drank once more with George and Mike we waited for John to return. The snow was getting very heavy and a wind had picked up, it was bloody freezing outside and wasn't exactly boiling in. We waited and waited and eventully decided enough was enough and got ready to leave for home. It was just as we were putting on our helmets that John finally arrived, he looked freezing and was covered in snow. Bless him, he was persuaded to skip another pint at the Plough and head fopr home and that we all did. The 4 of them heading back down towards Dorking whilst I headed off alone back down Anstie lane towards Capel.

The trip back was tough, there was thick snow, drifting in places and I had to walk the odd small stretch. The bottom of Anstie lane hadn't seen traffic of any sort until my tyre marks and on reaching the A29 I was passed by a couple of brave motorists (one in each direction) whom I'm sure were amazed to see a cyclist out. I eventually made it home in about twice the time it usally takes but safely which is of course the main thing. Roll on Saturday for another adventure in the snow !
