"Protecting the future of Moray Firth trout and the communities that depend on them through education, conservation and restoration”

The trout is a key part of Scotland’s natural heritage and is a very valuable species to the communities around the Moray Firth. However, numbers o0f sea trout are declining fast and very little is unknown about other wild trout populations. The Moray Firth Trout Initiative (MFTI) is a partnership project, working with local Fisheries Trusts, District Salmon Fishery Boards and Community Angling Associations to protect this species through environmental education and the conservation of trout populations and their habitat.

The MFTI is working with the local angling communities to protect this valuable species and the communities that rely on them through the delivery of 2 programmes: Programme 1 - Environmental Education, Programme 2 - Conservation. These 2 programmes will strive to ensure a healthy trout population for the benefit of the local angling associations and the wider community for years to come.

Aims

  1. The conservation of Moray Firth trout populations
  2. Improved education and awareness of trout ecology, freshwater environments and associated threats in the local community.
  3. A network of community volunteers and river ambassadors.
  4. A sustainable and locally managed Moray Firth rod and line fishery for trout.
  5. The improved understanding and management of Moray Firth trout populations
