Islay has livestock to be proud of: the exceptional fertility of our island, our extensive farming practices, and the unique effect of our soft and whisky-laden air make meat produced on Islay something very special indeed.

Livestock born, bred and despatched on the island does not suffer the stress of long journeys, climate changes, the social pressures of mixing with other herds and the crowding inevitable at large marts and in major abattoirs.

"Food miles" are kept to the minimum from farm to butcher.

We want you to appreciate these facts, and to be assured beyond all doubt that the meat on your plate is "hatched and despatched on Islay."  We can do this by putting our seal of confirmation on every carcase that we can PROVE BEYOND ALL DOUBT was born on the island, spent the most part of its life on Islay and came to the Avonvogie Abattoir.  Identity tagging, movement forms and (for pigs) our own knowledge of the farmers concerned makes it possible for us to guarantee that where we have stamped a carcase with MEAT ISLAY! the meat has been "hatched and despatched on Islay." 

Not every chop or steak will bear the stamp, of course, but you will know that when a butcher, a retailer, a food producer - or a farmer uses our MEAT ISLAY! label, then they are telling you that the animal passed through our hands and has all the MEAT ISLAY! advantages.
