Work in progress

The bits here are very much draft and work in progress. It has not been my habit to share 'drafts' for reasons I would guess are similar to your own. But this is my playground and I reserve the right to change my mind and take the risk of putting into the public domain some personal thoughts - some less well formed than others, and some which on reflection I will decide are just expressions of my irrational prejudices and illogical thinking, I would be very interested in your reflections as you read - if you wanted to share them.

I made a 10 minute presentation at a conference 6th June 2010 on the work of educators and schools developing inclusive gifted and talented educational theory, practice and provision. The presentation - which I hope will grow if I can encourage people to contribute - can be downloaded here and a video of me presenting, (yeh I know, embarrassing but if I dont look I am not going to know what to improve) is on YouTube thanks to Jack. The first video is of Dr Barry Hymer introducing the work of Carol Dweck. Barry is a treat to listen to and I really appreciate this opportunity to be able to go over and over what he says.

 Draft thesis

I have just completed a draft for the interenal reader. Lots of people have been kind enough to respond to the drafts and I am going to keep working on it with their responses in mind after I hear from the reader.

This proved helpful in focussing me. 'How to write a thesis' I think this helpful now whereas if I had focussed on this to start with I would have extinguished my own creativity by trying to fit into a formula. But then the major reason for creating the thesis is not to get a doctorate; the doctorate is a vehicle not the destination.

 Other bits and bobs

These are from some time back - but as I dont want to loose them am leaving them here for the time being.

I have been thinking about
my concern with traditional research methods in education and the importance of understanding the influence of the research method used for educational enquiry. Bit of a mouthful, but I have found trying to articulate why I am concerned and why I want to work with Living Theory, surprisingly energising. I know I am way off being able to really engage other researchers with confidence but I am working on it and would be pleased if someone would tell me what they think of what I have written.

Chris Jones, Nigel Harrissonisson, Jack Whitehead and I put in a symposium proposal in for BERA  as a focus to develop our living theory research accounts with our colleagues.

I was confronted in December 2006 by the DFES directives regarding Gifted and Talented Education and wanted to respond generatively rather than defensively.

My final draft

Huxtable (2006)
Developing my understandings of gifts and taleHuxtable respond to national developments

This is by way of a new draft 7th Jan 07

Huxtable M (2007) working on a generative response to the DFESHuxtable
ing my understandings of gifts and talents as I respond to national developments

I am still not happy with how far I got but have put together a bit more in a paper I prepared for  a lecture to PGCE students Feb 07 on gifted and talented education I have also put this in my writings section - so I can find it.

I got quite excited about the theories of learning at one of the masters group meetings and was encouraged to try to express what I was saying in an account that might be useful to the rest of the group. I got this far - see what you think

Huxtable M (2006) contribution to the masters learners and learning ‘I claim to have learnt – what evidence is there for my claim and what learning theories have influenced me?’
