My name is Malcolm Macmillan and I am currently a Lecturer and Distance Learning Co-ordinator for an HNC Social Care through the Residential Child Care (SIRCC) pathway through The Robert Gordon University. I have a Bachelor of Education Degree (Hons) in Primary Teaching and an HNC in Social Care.

I have 14 years experience in the care sector with Child care services and Adults with learning difficulties.  I have a particular interest in the area of Autism and have experience of a wide range across the spectrum.

I am interested in developing a model of learning that will provide the teaching for the HN Units of the HNC Social Care to meet the needs across the care sector.  Given the nature of the caring industry I recognise the constraints placed upon service providers and care staff such as the replacement costs, shift patterns and time itself.  It is essential that there is a method of learning that is flexible enough to cater for the demands of this sector yet meets with the academic rigours that could lead to further academic pursuits.

In 2004 I was offered the opportunity to put together an HNC Social Care by Distance Learning for the Scottish Institute for Residential Child Care through its partner The Robert Gordon University as part of the Scottish Executives drive for qualified workers within the care industry.  In the development of this and in the teaching of it I discovered a greater interest in the HNC Social Care by Distance Learning that is out with my present remit.

The current HNC Social Care is given 96 credits which falls short of the required 120 credits required for entrance into the Social Work Degree; therefore, such a shortfall could be met through the achieving of further HN Units.  This could also be achieved through registering for stand-alone units through an approved centred.

I would like to have some feedback, to see if this would be a worthy venture to begin.  If you work within the care sector and feel this would suit your training needs contact me at m.macconsult@btinternet.com and I will collate the feedback to ascertain the style of course that would suit individuals and groups.

I also provide a Consultancy service in the areas of:

  • Equality & Diversity
  • Working with people with Autism
  • Working with people with Learning Difficulties
  • Effective Team Working
  • Creating a Learning Culture

For information on any of these please contact me at the email address given above.
