SURREY HEATH

The area east of the Basingstoke Canal at Frimley, which goes to, and beyond, the Old Guildford Road is known as Surrey Heath. It has been a military training area since 1854 but with public access. Highway men made good use of the Heath in days gone by, and one Claude Duval was noted for his chivalry to the ladies whom he then proceeded to relieve of their money and jewelry as they made their way to London. His home was a thatched cottage on Frimley Ridges. In 1670, he was found guilty of six robberies and sentenced to death. Despite many attempts to intercede, the King did not pardon him and he was executed at Tyburn.  Although Duval was not hung at Frimley Green others were, and as late as 1850 three men were hung there, in public, for the murder of the Frimley Green parish priest.
