Of Halifax in the riding of West Yorkshire.

Nelson’s naval victory off Trafalgar in 1805 secures Britain from a French invasion. A year earlier and the first steam railway locomotive makes its successful run in South Wales and two years later the slave trade in the British Empire is abolished. Just a few of the things going on in the world, while in a small village near Halifax West Yorkshire, Joseph Kitson was born.

Joseph’s mother and father have been identified as John and Mary the parents being stated as such in the Stoney Royd Cemetery burial records for Joseph. A marriage certificate is in the Halifax Parish Records for a John Kitson and Mary Batley for 5th Oct 1801, both of the Southowram Parish.

Joseph married Elizabeth Wilson on the 16th March 1826 in Halifax, Elizabeth was born in Halifax in 1805.

The 1841 census show the family living in Siddal Hall, Siddal, Halifax with all their family. Joseph a Farmer, the occupation on his marriage certificate in 1826 was a “delver” yet here 15 years later he is a “farmer of 18 acres”, The farm of 18 acres was known as Lower Grove Farm on Orchard Lane in Siddal.
