The earliest known keyboard instrument was the Ancient Greek hydraulic, a type of pipe organ, invented in the third century BC. ... The harpsichord and clavichord were both common until the widespread adoption of the piano in the eighteenth century.
In the 1920/30s cinema organs enjoyed a period of popularity when they provided the music for silent films,. Later, in the 1950/90s, home electronic organ were popular and hundreds of Electronic Organ Societies sprung up all over the UK.
At the peak of their popularity, Home Electronic Festivals were a great attraction with the first one taking place at a Pontin's holiday site in December 1980. The following year (1981) around 2,000 enthusiasts attended a week-long festival at Pontin's Tower Beach Prestatyn.
On the turn of the century (2000) single manual electronic keyboards dominated the market with sampled sounds, which made them sound like exactly like real musical instruments.
