Jane is a local artist now living and working in Catterline.  She studied at Gray's School of Art and The Northern College, before commencing a teaching career which spans some 32 years, both at home and abroad. She now develops her art practice whilst teaching and tutoring part-time.

Using a varied and curious mix of techniques and media, her work has been described as: “Amazingly colourful semi-abstract landscapes which are wonderfully evocative, textural, layered and quite dream-like. The Highland Cow paintings are appealing and humorous with bright, engaging colours, tactile surfaces and richly applied paints using highly gestural marks”.

In her landscapes and abstract pieces Jane often works intuitively creating layered, textural images which are emotional responses to places she has lived in or passed through.  These works are underpinned and informed by her textile and jewellery training during her formative years. She aims to entice the viewer to 'see' in a new way and to 'feel' something of the initial spark within the image, which fascinated her enough to create the piece.

The 'Coo' series came about because of the herd living in the field next door to her home.  They are ready subjects and their richly textured coats and amusing expressions tempted her to explore their portraits in a colourful and imaginative way.   Recent developments of this engaging theme have been to focus in on their faces, enlarging muzzles and noses to become the focal point of the work and to allow a more abstract approach to the treatment of their hairstyles!

She was recently approached by Vogue Magazine to have a small feature in their Artist's Wall Of Fame and one of these 'Coo' images can be seen in the March 2013 issue.  From this, Jane was commissioned to create a painting for a client in Switzerland.

Jane's work is held in private collections in USA, UK, Belgium, Australia, Sultanate of Oman, Egypt and U.A.E.  She regularly exhibits in Milton of Crathes Art Gallery and participated in NEOS over the last 4 years and AboyneArt 2010. She currently has work on display in – Still Life, Aberlour, Touched by Scotland, Oyne, Doyle's Cafe, Balfron, The Arch Bistro, Fettercairn, Cults Dental Practice and New Life Fitness, Laurencekirk.

Please note that the price of Jane's paintings remains the same whether purchased directly or from a gallery.
