Do you want more volunteers?
19 August 2011

The Federation of City Farms and Community Gardens

and Growing for Life*

are looking for opportunities for volunteers

We are aiming to create two lists of South West projects (eg, community gardens/farms) that are happy to receive enquiries from people looking for volunteer opportunities.

List 1 will be made available to organizations that work with vulnerable people and these may include ex-offenders or other people disadvantaged by social exclusion.  Your own volunteering policies and procedures would determine their suitability for your project (eg, through recruitment procedures, undertaking CRB checks etc).

The Fed is also creating a second list for Cornwall projects:

This list, list 2 is Cornwall-specific and being drawn up to support a health initiative being delivered by the Community Health Unit, Cornwall Council.   This will be made available to Cornwall Council employees and their families, with the aim of improving their health and well being by encouraging them to take up healthier lifestyles.  This is only applicable to Cornwall-based projects.  Your own volunteering policies and procedures would determine their suitability for your project (eg, through recruitment procedures, undertaking CRB checks etc).

If you would like to be included in one or both of these lists, please could you complete the following details and return to me, Jeany Robinson at  jeany@farmgarden.org.uk  by Monday 22nd August.

For your information:

Growing for Life  www.edenproject.com/growingforlife  started by working with offenders in South West prisons, developing horticulture skills, improving confidence and self esteem, supporting behaviour and attitude change and providing a range of life-skills.  This work has now expanded to include a wider range of vulnerable and disadvantaged people that are at risk of social exclusion.

Growing for Life continues this work by supporting individuals within external Growing for Life projects, through a partnership in the SW with Shekinah Mission. These provide further opportunities for engagement and personal development, providing social interaction, routine, learning, stability and skills and experience, with the eventual aim of gaining employment.

We have developed one external Growing for Life project in Torbay and are exploring possibilities to create further projects around the South West.

See website for Torbay project:  http://www.growing-for-life.co.uk/
