Bradninch Bee Yards a Hive of Activity!!
09 March 2010

Introduction to Bee Keeping part 1

The bee-spoke course organised for the Brandninch Bee Group was very well attended by existing and new members of the group and was an excellent introduction to keeping bees.

Our trainer, Dr Mick Street is very knowledgeable and experienced and was well received by the group. The day covered the three casts of bees, the life cycle of the queen, parts of the hive and equipment needed for handling bees.

Dr Street showed everyone how to make up frames that fit into the hive, and they spent a practical session making their own.  It was certainly a hive of activity!!

The end of the day involved visits to various possible sites around the town to look at suitability.

HogCO surprised everyone by donating 2 hives to the group to get them started, but it wont be until May that the group gets their first nucleus of bees - and the start of their bee yard.

The next theoretical course is on 20th March and will cover swarming and swarm prevention, the products of the hive, honey removal and extraction, bee plants, and feeding bees & preparation for winter.
