Bradninch Bees are Buzzing!
06 February 2010

The Bradninch Bee Party on 6th February was a hive of activity with many more people than anticipated turning up to find out more about bees.  The event was facilitated by HogCO's Joanna Winterburn who spoke about the work of HogCO and introduced the Bradninch Bee group, explained what the group hoped to achieve and encouraged the local community to get involved.

“The group expected 10 to 15 people at the most, especially as the event coincided with the 6 Nations Rugby – but the response was incredible – over 90 people turned up with many more listening from the hallway outside!”

She then introduced Fred Rice, a beekeeper of 50 years who gave an overview of the life of bees, how to care for them, their enemies, and the equipment needed to start a colony.

“Fred was great” Joanna said “very informative with plenty of humour thrown in!”

Other beekeepers also joined the party with various types of hives on display, and a microscope that gave everyone the opportunity to look at a dead bee in detail.

The group provided cakes, biscuits and bread based on honey, held a raffle and had a children’s corner.

The event has boosted the group numbers by over 30, there were also offers of land, and donations of equipment.  “What a fantastic day” one of the founder members said “we never expected a response like this.  I am absolutely delighted!”
