About the project:

Barnfield Farm is a residential care home for adults with learning disabilities. Every Monday and Thursday afternoon, some of the service users work on a horticulture project within the grounds. There are raised beds, two polytunnels and a small orchard on site. The service users are supported to work towards a City & Guilds 'skills for working life' qualification, and each individual manages their own plot. The produce from the garden is then used in the kitchen, encouraging and enabling the service users to eat a healthy diet.

In addition to working on the horticulture project, Phil (an experienced horticulturist) volunteers at Barnfield Farm each Thursday to manage another area of raised beds and grow food in the polytunnels. He is very keen to develop this into a productive community garden for people from the surrounding area to join. Please get in touch with HogCO if you are interested in finding out more.

Barnfield Farm Horticulture Project aims to:

• Educate the service users about how to grow fruit and veg, and healthy eating.
• Provide the residential house with fruit and veg all year round
• Continue to teach practical qualifications which can help the service users progress into employment.
• Expand the project to educate more individuals (including non service users from the wider community) and bring more of the land into production.
