St. Mary Magdalene  Community Garden, Chulmleigh

email

ABOUT THE PROJECT:

The upper closed churchyard provides an important habitat and tranquil space in the  centre of the vilage. The site has in parts become very overgrown with bramble and the aim is to open up  the western end, making it accessible as a community garden for everyone to enjoy.

We want to maximise the space to create a place for the community and visitors to the village. We are planning a wildlife garden, a growing space for cultivating fruit and vegetables and aim to create a learning environment for local people, particularly young people and local school children.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES:

  • Clearing the space of undergrowth to reveal headstones and identify places for growing
  • Use the Parish magazine, noticeboards etc to communicate about the project to the wider community
  • To develop a programme of activities and attract volunteers
  • To plant wildflowers, erect bird boxes and manage habitats to increase local biodiversity
  • To develop pilot food growing spaces
  • To encourage participation from all sectors of the community

LATEST NEWS:

July 2012

Clearing the undergrowth has been a priority at the start of this project. We have coppiced the lime trees to bring in more light and have revealed many headstones. We will be putting together a plan of the site including areas for growing, for wildlife and for quiet contemplation..
