Who we are (February 2010)

The aim of this project is to provide the spaces, infrastructure - sheds, greenhouses etc, assist with cultivation, allocate and supervise the plot holders for an increasing area of community allotments.

LATEST NEWS

May 2012 (see below for ealier news items)

Greener Ilfracombe had an 'open day' event at The Lantern in Ilfracombe on Thursday 3rd May.

Between 1.30pm and 3.00pm children, with teachers, from Infant & Junior Schools, learnt about how to live more sustainably, grow food etc.

From 4.00pm to 7.30pm, in conjunction with Biosphere, 'Communities Living Sustainably' project, invited guests and the public participated in 'open space' discussions to answer the question "What can our communities do together to create a more secure future for our food, energy and water needs?"

As well as an opportunity to take stock and think about what else would make Ilfracombe an even more sustainable place to live, the results from the consultation will feed into an application to BIG Lottery's Communities Living Sustainably Fund, a partnership bid including North Devon Biosphere Foundation, Biosphere Reserve's Partnership, Bideford Sustainability Group, North Devon Homes, Beaford Arts, North Devon Plus. NDVS, Silvanus Trust and Mole Valley Farmers.

January 2012

We have 3 garden projects on the go: Cow Green is a wildlife garden that has been going for over 10 years; Calf Green is starter allotments (originally for community groups but it has evolved to be for young families and individuals); and Laston Green, the most recent project is a community garden where we have established a corner with fruit trees, have planted a fruiting hedge and are planning to grow veg.

We have just received the good news that we have been successful in a bid to Devon County Council to put in a gate and an irrigation system.

August 2010

We have a series of allotments up and running at our Calf Green site at Pembroke Lodge. Plot holders include a local infant school, young mothers, Transform and a Brownie pack.

We are now negotiating for access to a second piece of land at the other end of town - Laston Green. HogCO is helping us to develop our design and costings for this project.

June 2010

HogCO provided advice on constituting the group and they were one of the first recipients of the Legal Toolkit. Group members have attended a range of training including Legal and Governance and Basic Gardening.
