About the project:

We have set up a community food growing project for adults with learning disabilities. This will give the group a feeling of well being, boost their self esteem and they would be a part of a project with quick and positive outcomes.

We aim to:

• Set up a community food growing project for adults with a learning disability;
• Give people with a learning disability an opportunity to work alongside others to achieve outcomes which would give a feeling of inclusion;
• Set up this project over a 3 year plan;
• Increase health awareness and food choices through the growing and eating of fresh fruit and vegetables;
• And to encourage exercise by participation.

Since September 2011, Honiton Town Council have allowed the group to tend a community garden in the town. This is going really well and the site is ideal as there are public toilets nearby, something that was a problem with the previous site. The group visit the garden for 2 hours every Friday, when members have the chance to work together and gain growing skills.

HogCO are helping the group develop their ideas for the site, which will need to be approved by the council. Ideas include fruit trees, soft fruits, some seating areas and managing the site with wildlife in mind.
