Very positive discussions were held with the landowner this month and we are confident that we will formalise an agreement soon.

Who we are

December 2009

We are Ashburton Community Land Project, a not for profit organisation aiming to benefit the local community through land use projects. We hope that by initiating and promoting land projects we can encourage community spriti, outdoor learning and a local resilience against the effects of climate change.

Our present focus is on satisfying local demand for vegetable plots:- there are only 4 allotments in Ashburton and over 50 people on a waiting list. Alongside our search for suitable land for growing plots, we are looking into garden share schemes for Ashburton and more community vegetable gardens like the one set up by members of our group in the garden of Sand's School.

In the future we will be looking at other land use projects for the town such as community supported agriculture, forest schools and forest gardens.

We aim to:

  • facilitate allotments, community gardens, shared gardens and any other projects involving growing your own food in Ashburton
  • be fully inclusive of all sections of the local community.

July 2010

HogCo ran a Roadshow in Mar 2010 for local landowners, community members and Ashburton Community Land Trust. This highlighted the importance of local food growing and gave momentum to the search for land. Through formal and informal discussions HogCO helped make contact with interested landowners.
